About Us

The Building & Safety Division is responsible for ensuring that all construction within the United Islands of Alto meets adopted building codes, fire safety standards, and accessibility requirements. Operating in close coordination with the Department of Public Works and the Planning Department, the division reviews construction plans, issues building permits, and conducts inspections throughout the construction process.

Mission

To protect the safety of Alto's residents and visitors by ensuring that all buildings and structures are designed and constructed in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

Key Services

  • Plan Review: Technical review of architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans for code compliance.
  • Building Permits: Issuance of permits for new construction, additions, tenant improvements, and demolition. See Permits & Licensing for more information.
  • Inspections: Field inspections during construction to verify compliance with approved plans and applicable codes.
  • Certificate of Occupancy: Final approval certifying that a completed building is safe for occupancy.
  • Code Enforcement: Investigation of complaints related to unpermitted construction, unsafe conditions, and code violations.
  • Grading Permits: Review and permitting of grading, excavation, and earthwork activities.

Inspection Requests

Inspections must be requested at least one business day in advance. Contractors and property owners can schedule inspections by phone or email.
