Permits & Licensing
The City of Alto requires permits and licenses for various construction, business, and event activities. This page provides an overview of the most common types.
Building Permits
A building permit is required for new construction, additions, renovations, demolition, and certain types of repair work within the UIA. Permit applications are reviewed by the Department of Public Works.
When You Need a Permit
- New building construction
- Structural additions or modifications
- Electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work
- Demolition of structures
- Fencing over 6 feet in height
- Retaining walls
- Solar panel installations
How to Apply
- Submit a permit application with project plans to the Department of Public Works.
- Applications are reviewed within 10 business days.
- Approved permits are valid for 12 months from date of issue.
- Inspections are scheduled through DPW during and after construction.
Business Licenses
All businesses operating within the United Islands of Alto are required to hold a valid business license. Licenses are renewed annually.

Event Permits
Public gatherings, festivals, and events held in city parks or on public property require an event permit. Applications should be submitted at least 30 days in advance.
