UIA Parliament
The UIA Parliament is the legislative body of the United Islands of Alto, responsible for enacting federal laws, setting the national budget, and providing oversight of federal agencies. Parliament convenes in the Capitol Building in the District of Castleton.
Structure
Parliament is composed of elected representatives from across the United Islands. Members are elected by the residents of their respective districts to serve fixed terms. Parliament is led by a Speaker, who presides over legislative sessions and manages the order of business.
Responsibilities
- Drafting and enacting federal legislation
- Approving the annual federal budget
- Confirming appointments to federal agency leadership
- Oversight and review of federal agency operations
- Ratifying treaties and inter-territorial agreements
- Amending the UIA Charter (the foundational governing document)
Legislative Process
Proposed legislation is introduced by members of Parliament and referred to the appropriate committee for review. After committee consideration, bills are brought to the full Parliament for debate and vote. Approved legislation takes effect upon the date specified in the bill or 30 days after passage, whichever is later.
Public Participation
Parliament sessions are open to the public. Agendas and session schedules are published in advance. Residents may submit written testimony on pending legislation or request to speak during public comment periods.
